The Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities in partnership with the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health is sponsoring a two day workshop covering sibling issues across the lifespan for brothers and sisters of people with special health, developmental, and mental health concerns. Register here.
Who Should Attend?
The training is open to all professionals including psychologists, social workers, service providers, teachers, adult siblings, and other family members.
Day One: Professionals, service providers, parents, and others may choose to attend Friday only, to learn about sibs’ every changing issues across the life span. This is for an audience interested in sibling issues, but not necessarily intersted in how to run a Sibshop.
Day One and Two: By attending both days of the training, you will be learn about sibling issues and become a certified Sibshop Facilitator. Sibshop facilitator trainees must attend both days of the Sibshop training. Day one will cover life span issues for siblings who have a brother or sister with a special health, developmental or mental health concerns. Upon completion of the two-day training, trainees are considered “first-generation” Sibshop Facilitators and may (upon registration with the Sibling Support Project) start their own local Sibshop.
What is a Sibshop?
Sibshops are a spirited mix of new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range), new friends, and discussion activities. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another– if they are given a chance.
Here’s What You’ll Take Back
On day one of this training, you will learn about siblings’s life-long concerns. The two day workshop will give you all the materials and know-how you need to start, plan, and conduct the activities to hold your own Sibshops.
During the two day training, facilitators in training will learn about siblings’ lifelong concerns, find out how to organize a local Sibshop and experience what a Sibshop is all about. On day two, Don Meyer, trainees, and local young brothers and sisters will conduct a four hour Demonstration Sibshop.
